Looking for the Good in Your Love Relationships

Have you ever wanted to be with someone so much that your body ached? Did it feel as if every part of you had finally met your soul mate but that it was impossible for the two of you to be together?

If you have, I’d like you to write about your experience in your journal. It’s important for us to acknowledge the hurt and pain we go through when something like this happens. If we don’t, that grief eats away at us. We can have all kinds of physical and emotional problems as a result. We can also begin to blame God if the relationship doesn’t work out as we hoped, but it’s not God’s fault.

Write out all the details that you can remember, and then go outside for a walk. Get out in nature, where your body can feel grounded, and walk for as long as you can. When you come back from your walk, go back to your journal. This time, write down all the reasons it was good that the relationship didn’t work. You may not want to do this, but it’s important. Do it for the sake of your health and so that you can move on from the hurt. I guarantee, if the two of you were meant to be together, you would have been. If being with that person were for your highest good, you would have been.

As I’m writing, an image from The Wizard of Oz pops into my mind. Just as in that film, so much of life goes on “behind the scenes.” Some of the “whys” hide behind a curtain; we don’t have the whole picture.

The last night that Alberto was in town, we both cried in the restaurant because we knew our paths were meant to separate. We had one amazing month together, a month that strengthened both of us, but it was not meant to last a lifetime. Alberto taught me about a different kind of love, and this healed me in ways I didn’t expect. I was able to look for the good in my relationship with Alberto, and when I did, I saw God everywhere.
